PASADENA : Family of Man Who Died in Custody Seeks Damages

Lawyers representing the family of a man who died in police custody last month after he was shot with a stun gun and hogtied in the back of a police car have filed claims against three cities whose police officers participated in his arrest.

The family of Michael James Bryant, a popular Pasadena barber, asks for damages “in excess of $200 million,” according to papers filed with the city clerks of Los Angeles, Pasadena and San Marino. Such claims, usually rejected by municipalities, must be filed before a lawsuit can be pursued.

Bryant led officers on a car chase on March 9 through three cities, ending in his capture at a hillside apartment complex in Highland Park.

The papers claim that Bryant had sought to surrender to police, who beat him before rendering him unconscious with the stun gun.
