HUNTINGTON BEACH : Walking of Bikes on Pier May Be Allowed
The City Council has introduced an ordinance that would allow bicyclists to walk, but not ride, their bikes on the new city pier.
Existing city law forbids even the walking of bikes on the pier. The new ordinance, which would be more tolerant of bikes and change some other rules governing the pier, is scheduled for a second reading and final passage Monday. It would take effect May 19.
Since the new pier opened last July, bicyclists have complained that they cannot walk their vehicles on the structure. Some owners of expensive racing bikes have said they worry about leaving their bikes, even when locked up, at the foot of the pier.
Bike racks are provided near the foot of the pier for those who want to lock up their bikes there. The new ordinance would prohibit bikes being chained or locked to pier railings.
The ordinance also would allow some parts of the pier to be closed to fishing.
