SCC in Third Place at District Tennis
NEWPORT BEACH — The Southern California College men’s tennis team is in third place after the first round of the NAIA District 3 Championships Thursday at the Balboa Bay Club.
The Vanguards have 11 points. Point Loma Nazarene has 16 points and Azusa Pacific 15.
SCC’s Shannon Peace and Jeff Westover, seeded third, beat Ed Amstutz and Matt Baer of Westmont, 7-6, 6-3, in a first-round doubles match, but unseeded Dan Ray and Miika Keronen of Azusa Pacific beat top-seeded Bobby Carlton and Aaron Webster of SCC, 2-6, 6-2, 6-4.
Webster, who beat Bill Bush of Azusa Pacific, 3-6, 6-2, 6-4, and Carlton, who beat Keronen, 7-6, 6-2, were the only Vanguard singles players to advance in second-round play.
