Allison Runs Out of Gas, Unser Jr. Wins

Al Unser Jr., getting a break when Davey Allison ran out of gas in the last turn of the race, held off last-ditch challenges by Dale Earnhardt and Jack Baldwin to win a record seventh International Race of Champions event Saturday at Talladega, Ala.

The defending Indianapolis 500 winner and two-time IROC champion took the lead in the 33-lap, 101.08-mile race--the third round of the four-race all-star series--six laps from the finish.

He stayed in front until Allison, the IROC point leader, drove around Unser to take the lead in Turn 1 on the last trip around the 2.66-mile, high-banked oval at Talladega Superspeedway.

But Allison’s engine suddenly began to sputter and stalled coming off the fourth turn.

The rest of the competitors sped by, with Unser weaving to keep Earnhardt behind him.

Baldwin took second place, trailing Unser by a quarter-car length at the finish. Unser is the first non-NASCAR driver to win at Talladega in six IROC races.
