AMERICAN LEAGUE ROUNDUP : White Sox Are Saved by Bell, 5-4
George Bell, whose two-run homer put Chicago back in the game, added a game-winning triple in the 10th inning as the White Sox averted a weekend sweep with a 5-4 victory Sunday over the Oakland Athletics at Chicago.
Bell’s game-winning hit against reliever Rich Gossage (3-1) was a one-out line drive into the right-field corner and it scored Joey Cora, who walked to start the inning.
“I have to tip my hat to George Bell,” Gossage said. “It was a fine piece of hitting on his part.
“He fought off a couple of really good pitches and then I tried to go away, and he hit it.”
The White Sox trailed, 4-1, when Bell homered in the eighth against reliever Joe Boever. A sacrifice fly by Ozzie Guillen against reliever Rick Honeycutt tied the score in the ninth.
Roberto Hernandez (1-1) pitched three scoreless innings.
Seattle 10, Kansas City 7--Lou Piniella won his 500th game as a manager with the help of a go-ahead ninth-inning single from 31-year-old rookie Rich Amaral at Kansas City.
Ken Griffey Jr. added a two-run triple to wrap up a game that featured five lead changes. Griffey also had a single and double.
Jeff Montgomery (2-2), the Royals’ third pitcher, gave up a single to Pete O’Brien leading off the ninth. After a sacrifice, Amaral drove in pinch-runner Omar Vizquel to make it 8-7.
Russ Swan (2-2) pitched 3 2/3 innings of relief, giving up a run on two hits while striking out two and walking one.
Milwaukee 9, Baltimore 1--Kevin Reimer’s two-run, bases-loaded single keyed a three-run third inning against Fernando Valenzuela, lifting the Brewers at Baltimore.
Cal Eldred (5-5) ended a personal two-game losing streak. He gave up seven hits and struck out six in eight innings.
Valenzuela (1-4) gave up five runs on eight hits.
Boston 5, New York 2--Mo Vaughn homered twice and four Red Sox pitchers held the Yankees to six hits at Boston.
Vaughn hit a solo homer over the Yankees’ bullpen in right field in the fourth inning and another solo homer, his seventh of the season, to center field in the seventh. It was the first two-homer game of his career.
Both home runs came against Jimmy Key (4-2), who gave up six hits and struck out five over seven innings.
Greg Harris (1-0) pitched 1 2/3 innings and Jeff Russell finished for his 10th save.
Toronto 2, Minnesota 1--Pat Hentgen pitched a strong game and got offensive help from Alfredo Griffin at Toronto as the Blue Jays handed the Twins their seventh consecutive defeat.
Hentgen (6-2) pitched 7 2/3 innings, giving up five hits, striking out four and walking two as the Blue Jays won for the eighth time in 10 games. Duane Ward got the final four outs for his 11th save.
Scott Erickson (2-6) took the loss.
Detroit 4, Cleveland 2--Mickey Tettleton hit a tie-breaking home run over the glove of leaping center fielder Kenny Lofton in the sixth inning to lead the Tigers at Cleveland.
Mark Leiter (3-1) limited the Indians to two runs and five hits in 6 2/3 innings.
Cleveland’s Matt Young (0-3) gave up three runs and seven hits in 5 2/3 innings. He has not won in 45 appearances since May 20, 1991.
