“LOLLAPALOOZA” DOINGS: Curious about the Santa Fe Dam Recreation Area, the site for the Aug. 7 Southern California stop on the “Lollapalooza ‘93” tour?
The tour organizers say the locale, a park situated amid the gravel pits near the intersection of the 210 and 605 freeways in Irwindale, is the best spot available. They point out that the area successfully hosted such past summer events as the 1988 and ’89 Country Fests, the second year of which was attended by about 70,000 over its two days. Thirty thousand tickets for the Aug. 7 “Lollapalooza” date go on sale soon, with a second date possible.
But some concert industry insiders question the choice over the Irvine Meadows Amphitheatre, the Southern California site of the first two “Lollapalooza” tours. They say the dam area might have looked green and lovely in springtime when it was scouted, but it will more likely be “100 degrees with dirty gray skies” on concert day.
