Disposable Lighters to Be Child-Resistant: Federal regulators voted to require manufacturers to make disposable butane lighters child-resistant by next summer, noting that children playing with cigarette lighters start more than 5,000 fires a year. The fires resulted in about 150 deaths and more than 1,000 injuries, a Consumer Product Safety Commission panel said. The new design is expected to prevent about 100 fire-related deaths a year. The decision applies to all disposable butane lighters, inexpensive refillables and novelty lighters that resemble toys or depict cartoon characters.
