LOCAL NOTES : First Catholic All-Star Football Game Is Saturday
The first Catholic all-star football game for graduating seniors from Southern Section highs schools will be played at 7 p.m. Saturday at La Mirada High School.
A total of 15 players on the South roster come from three Catholic high schools in Orange County.
Mater Dei--Michelangelo Barragan (wide receiver/defensive back), Brian Barajas (wide receiver/defensive back), Fernando Carvajal (offensive line), Edgar Macias (offensive line/defensive line), Kevin Pekar (running back/linebacker), Nickey Sualua (running back/linebacker).
Santa Margarita--Kevin Duffy (wide receiver), Brent Noonan (center/defensive line), Joe Winkelmann (defensive end).
Servite--Michael Coppola (linebacker), Steve Correa (wide receiver), Brian Crooks (defensive line), Chris Garza (linebacker), Elphamous Malbrue (running back), Christopher Szeles (center).

Ryan Jones, a first baseman from Irvine High, has signed with the Toronto Blue Jays and will report to the club’s Class-A Pioneer League team in Medicine Hat, Canada, on June 25, his family announced.
Jones hit .483, with seven home runs and 32 runs batted in for Irvine this season. He was drafted in the second round by the Blue Jays.

Kennedy High School boys’ soccer Coach Vladimir Nieto has been named to the coaching staff of the first World Scholar-Athlete Games, scheduled June 30-July 1 at the University of Rhode Island.
The games will feature 2,000 scholar athletes, aged 16-19, who show talent in either art or athletics. Participants are from 45 countries, including the United States.
