Southeast Area : 3 School Districts Get Health Services Grants
Three Southeast-area school districts have received grants to provide health and social services to poor children and their families.
Montebello Unified, Bellflower Unified and ABC Unified school districts have been awarded Healthy Start grants.
The state gives grants of up to $400,000 to school districts that are already working with county and private agencies to provide health services. Smaller grants are awarded to help school districts develop such plans.
The ABC Unified School District, which serves families in Cerritos, Artesia, Hawaiian Gardens and parts of other cities, will receive $400,000 to operate a support center for the next three years.
The center at Killingsworth Junior High School in Hawaiian Gardens will offer health screenings, immunizations, counseling, referrals, nutritional services and legal counseling.
The Montebello district will receive $50,000, and Bellflower $47,388, to develop plans for a health center.
