Ten Southeast-area high school seniors have won prestigious scholarships from a national nonprofit testing and scholarship organization.
The students, winners of National Merit Scholarships, will each receive $250 to $2,000 a year for four years of undergraduate study.
The local winners are: Peter Ngo of St. John Bosco High School in Bellflower; Douglas H. Osato of Gahr High in Cerritos; Sheree T. Shen and Peter T. Wang from Whitney High in Cerritos; Zachary J. Baker from Downey High; David A. Yee from Warren High School in Downey; Jennifer L. Rindahl of Mayfair High in Lakewood; Paul A. Dong of Schurr High in Montebello, and Dyann R. Collins and Jerry N. Cortrite of Santa Fe High in Santa Fe Springs.
The college or university each student attends will fund the scholarships.
The students are among 2,600 nationwide who received college-sponsored scholarships through the Illinois-based National Merit Scholarship Corp. Scholarships for other National Merit winners are paid for by private donors and corporations and announced separately.
Judges selected winners from a field of 14,000 finalists based on students’ standardized test scores, activities, interests, goals and academic records.
