LOCAL NOTES : Grable to Take Over Los Amigos Basketball

Los Amigos has promoted junior varsity boys’ basketball coach Don Grable to head varsity coach, Los Amigos Athletic Director Dave Auxier said Friday. Grable replaces Clayton Olivier, who resigned this month.

Grable, 29, was an all-league player at Los Amigos. He graduated in 1982. He has been a math teacher at the school for four years.

He coached the girls’ varsity team during his first year at the school and has been the boys’ JV coach or a varsity assistant the last three. Last season, he led the JV to a 17-5 record, winning the Garden Grove League with a 13-1 record.

Olivier leaves after three seasons with a 19-51 record. Last season’s team was 7-16 and finished fifth in the league.

Mater Dei defensive back Brian Barajas has replaced Irvine’s Ryan Jones on the South roster for the 34th Orange County All-Star football game July 9 at Orange Coast College.

Jones became ineligible for the game when he signed a baseball contract with the Toronto Blue Jays.

Three area high school volleyball players will travel to the Olympic Training Center in Colorado Springs, Colo., to participate in a Youth National Team training camp, July 5-14.

Dana Hills’ Bob Hefty, Corona del Mar’s Brooks Hoppe and Newport Beach’s Mitch McCoy, all of the Balboa Bay Volleyball Club, were among 36 players invited to the camp.
