Disney Resort: A Chronology

* Jan. 12,1990: Chairman Michael D. Eisner announces that Walt Disney Co. is considering building a second theme park next to Disneyland. The proposal for Anaheim, however, will compete with plans for an ocean theme park in Long Beach.

* May 8, 1991: Disney officially unveils plans for a $3-billion expansion at Disneyland. The project includes several hotels, a shopping district and a second theme park called Westcot.

* Dec. 12, 1991: Disney chooses Anaheim as the site for its Southern California expansion. Long Beach proposal is dropped.

* Nov. 12, 1992: Anaheim releases environmental analysis of proposed resort. Seven short- and long-term impacts are identified, including increased traffic and pollution during construction and the loss of agricultural land.

* April 22, 1993: Disney releases detailed plans for the Westcot theme park. A giant spire in the middle will be surrounded by a learning and entertainment center.

* May 19, 1993: Anaheim Planning Commission endorses environmental, planning and zoning documents, setting up a final review of the project by the City Council.

* June 22, 1993: City Council approves environmental impact report and introduces zoning ordinances authorizing the project.

* June 29, 1993: City Council to give final approval to zoning ordinances. Before Disney will commit to construction, however, a financial agreement on the development must be reached between Anaheim and the company.

* July 22, 1993: Deadline for filing lawsuits challenging the environmental impact report.

* September-October, 1993: Disney and city to complete work on the development agreement specifying costs, how they will be paid and who will pay them.

* 1998: Theme park and hotel complex scheduled to be completed.
