BASEBALL / DAILY REPORT : AROUND THE MAJORS : Umpire Reportedly Drugged, Robbed

National League umpire Terry Tata, 53, was drugged and robbed by a female con artist during last week’s San Francisco Giants-San Diego Padres series, unidentified sources told the Times of San Mateo. Tata said he had no comment.

The newspaper gave this account:

Tata met a woman on the evening of June 21. When they went to his room the next night to share a bottle of wine, the woman reportedly slipped a tranquilizer into his drink and stole his Rolex, a gold bracelet, two World Series rings and $500 cash.

When Tata didn’t show up at the ballpark, police and hotel security discovered him in his room, drugged but otherwise unhurt.

Burlingame police confirmed that a man was drugged and robbed of more than $16,000 in cash and valuables in a Burlingame hotel, but would not confirm the identity of the victim.

Jose Canseco took the blame for injuring his right elbow during a one-inning outing last month that could sideline him for a year. “I take full responsibility for it. You don’t blame (Manager) Kevin Kennedy for that,” Canseco said. However, Tom Grieve, Texas Ranger general manager, spread the responsibility. “Jose is a player who wanted to pitch. But he doesn’t write the lineup card out. Kevin Kennedy does,” Grieve said. “As Kevin’s boss, I was well aware in spring training that Jose wanted to pitch. . . . I had every opportunity to tell Kevin not to do that. As (club president) Tom Schieffer told me, as my boss, he had every opportunity to do the same thing.”

Florida Marlin second baseman Bret Barberie is expected to be sidelined two weeks because of a partially torn ligament in his left knee. . . . Pitcher Mark Grant was placed on the 15-day disabled list by the Colorado Rockies because of a strained right shoulder. The right-hander is 0-1 with a 6.38 ERA in 18 1/3 innings.
