TENNIS ROUNDUP : Gustafsson Gets Past Pernfors
Two-time defending champion Magnus Gustafsson started his bid for a third consecutive Swedish Open title with a 6-3, 7-6 (7-5) victory over fellow Swede Mikael Pernfors Wednesday at Bastad.
Only Eric Sturgess of South Africa and Budge Patty of the United States have won the clay-court tournament three consecutive years, Sturgess from 1948-50 and Patty from 1952-54.
Swedish stars Bjorn Borg and Mats Wilander won three titles each, but not in successive years.
Gustafsson, seeded second, came from behind to win the second set. He saved a set point at 3-5, then broke Pernfors’ serve to tie 5-5 before winning the tiebreaker.
Fourth-seeded Jordi Arrese of Spain lost to Lars Jonsson of Sweden, 6-3, 6-2.

Petr Korda of the Czech Republic outlasted Chuck Adams, 4-6, 7-6 (7-4), 6-3, in the first round of the Gunze World Tennis at Toyko.
Alexander Volkov of Russia, with 11 aces, beat Jeff Tarango, 7-6 (7-5), 6-2.

Brian MacPhie of San Jose upset sixth-seeded Byron Black of Zimbabwe, 6-3, 7-6 (7-4), in the second round of the Hall of Fame Tennis Championships at Newport, R.I.
Third-seeded Javier Frana of Argentina swept Christo van Rensburg of South Africa, 6-4, 6-1.

Top-seeded Sergi Bruguera defeated Markus Zoecke of Germany, 6-4, 7-6 (7-3), to advance to the quarterfinals of the Swiss Open clay-court tournament at Gstaad.
Unseeded Gerard Solves of France upset fourth-seeded Wally Masur of Australia, 3-6, 6-3, 7-6 (7-1).
