DOWNTOWN : Library Advocates Fighting Closures
Fearing the demise of local public libraries, a group called the Committee to Save Our Libraries has been organized to lobby elected officials to keep open a number of the facilities slated for closure.
Its next meeting will be Tuesday at 7 p.m. on the fifth floor of the Department of Water and Power Building, 111 N. Hope St. The main topic of discussion will be supporting state Senate Bill 566, which would allow local governments to set up special property assessment districts to fund libraries.
The countywide committee of “non-librarians” was formed last fall after county officials announced their intent to close about a dozen libraries, according to founder Andrew Liberman, a free-lance journalist. The latest county budget proposal would close 52 of the county’s 83 libraries.
