Pick a flavor and take a seat....
Pick a flavor and take a seat. It’s time to dig into your favorite ice cream and savor the sweet sounds of The Concert Singers.
The 23-member group sponsors its fourth annual Sundae Sunday, an ice cream social and pops concert, beginning at 4 p.m. today in one of the South Bay’s biggest “back yards.”
Actually, as Kingsbury Jackson explains, his yard sidles up to the playing field of Loyola Marymount University, making it a very roomy place for an outdoor concert.
“I have a 1,000-foot side yard,” said Jackson, who sings bass with the group.
Director Colleen Cronin describes today’s program as “the best of doo-wop.” The versatile singing group often performs sacred and classical music but the sundae concert is a pop event focusing on vocal jazz from the 1920s through the 1980s.
Ice cream will be the first number on the program for the event. Audience members will be invited to make their own sundaes, big and small, topped or not, before settling down for the music.
Juanita Ketchum, a 29-year chorus member and the ice cream organizer, promises vanilla, chocolate and strawberry ice cream as well as frozen yogurt.
“Hot fudge is the best seller,” she said, but chocolate and fruit toppings will also be available.
The Concert Singers were originally formed in 1948 as one of several adult choruses sponsored by the city of Los Angeles’ Department of Cultural Affairs, Cronin said. In 1981 the chorus lost its funding but regrouped in 1982 as an independent nonprofit organization.
Tickets are $7, $5 for senior citizens 60 years and older. Proceeds benefit The Concert Singers. Jackson’s back yard is at 6981 West 80th St. in Westchester next to Loyola Marymount University.
