CAIRO : Mideast Shuttle
U.S. Secretary of State Warren Christopher is due in Cairo late Saturday to begin another round of shuttle diplomacy aimed at reviving momentum in the sputtering Arab-Israeli peace talks.
After meeting with Egyptian President Hosni Mubarak, Christopher is slated to hold similar sessions over the next four days with the leaders of Syria, Israel and Jordan.
U.S. officials are cautioning that no breakthroughs are likely. For the moment, Christopher wants mainly to bolster confidence in the United States as an honest broker, in hopes that he will be able “lay the groundwork for progress in the future” on some of the now-snagged negotiations between Israel and its Arab neighbors.
