Sadness Replaces Anger Over Death of Lewis
Upon learning of the death of Reggie Lewis, the initial emotion I felt was anger. I felt angry because I could not imagine anyone who is aware that he or she has a heart condition jeopardizing their life by participating in activities that are harmful to their health.
After thinking about it, the reasons became more clear. Athletes that are in their prime deny the fact that quitting the sport they love is the correct thing to do. How many times have athletes continued to push the limits of their hearts when they knew they were chancing death?
I feel deeply saddened for Reggie Lewis and his family, and I hope more athletes will learn to listen to their doctors and give up their athletic dreams to continue living.
