The Mighty Ducks have signed a three-year working agreement with the San Diego Gulls of the International Hockey League, it was announced Wednesday.

The affiliation will begin this season.

The Gulls, who play in the 13,200-seat San Diego Sports Arena, have not previously been affiliated with an NHL team.

“The agreement with San Diego as our primary affiliation makes perfect sense because of their geographical location to Orange County,” said Jack Ferreira, the Ducks’ general manager.

“The Gulls are a solid organization and play in a very competitive league. They are also committed to our club’s hockey philosophy on player development (and) that will be an important building block for the future of this franchise.”

Last season, the Gulls had the best regular-season record in IHL history, 62-12-8, and won the Western Conference championship.

The Gulls also announced the hiring of Harold Snepsts as coach.

Snepsts, who played 17 years as a defenseman in the NHL, replaces Rick Dudley, who resigned after one season to become director of professional scouting for the Kings.
