POMONA : Man Gets 60 Years for Shooting Officer, Chase
Two men have been sentenced for their roles in a March robbery in Pomona that left a police officer wounded and sparked a televised four-county chase.
Regino Deharo Jr., 21, of Santa Ana, who shot Pomona Police Officer Roger Mathews in the arm and led police from four agencies on a 50-mile chase, was sentenced in Pomona Superior Court to 60 years in prison, Deputy Dist. Atty. Michael Grosbard said.
Deharo pleaded no contest to six counts of second-degree attempted murder for firing at officers and four counts of assault with a firearm on a peace officer for pointing his gun at others. He also pleaded no contest to one count of hostage-taking for forcing Bob Moxley of Upland to drive him to Santa Ana while police and television helicopters followed.
Last month, Deharo’s co-defendant, 28-year-old Jesus Garcia of Pomona, was sentenced to 12 years for residential robbery with the use of a gun.
