Berganio Qualifies, Gore in Playoff
David Berganio Jr. of Sylmar qualified for the match-play portion of the U.S. Amateur on Wednesday with a 36-hole total of 145 at Champions Golf Club in Houston.
Jason Gore (71-75) of Valencia was involved in a playoff for one of the final match-play berths when darkness halted play until today.
Charlie Wi of Thousand Oaks (76-73), Corby Segal of Burbank (75-75), Mitch Voges of Simi Valley (78-74) and David Saylor of West Hills (79-83) missed the cut.
Scott Golditch of Northridge fired a 74 at the American Junior Golf Assn. Championship in Darien, Conn. Golditch is in sixth place at 151, five shots off the lead.
Ross Fulgentis of Westlake Village shot 75 in the AJGA tournament in Nashville, Tenn. Fulgentis, at 147, is seven shots off the lead with 18 holes remaining. Ben Cherney of Encino shot 80-73.
Jason Semelsberger of Newhall shot 74 for a two-day total of 147, leaving him eight shots back in the PGA Junior Championship at Pinehurst, N.C.
Soccer
Former Cal State Northridge soccer standout Bill Durkin has been hired as an assistant men’s coach for the Matadors. The St. Francis High product played for Northridge in 1988-89 and coached the women’s teams at UCLA and USC. Durkin, a defender, was an All-California Collegiate Athletic Assn. selection.
