Brett Butler and Tim Wallach are growing mustaches and goatees in support of Dave Hansen, who is also growing a beard as he heads toward breaking the L.A. Dodger single-season pinch-hit record of 17, set last season by Mitch Webster. “We told Hanny we would grow these things until he broke the record,” Butler said.

Eric Karros, who was fined $500 by National League umpire Bill White for allegedly spitting on an umpire during a game against the New York Mets, appealed the fine, saying he did not spit. He sent White a check for $500, but White lowered the fine and sent Karros a $300 check back. . . . Darryl Strawberry said he felt no side effects from swinging a bat on Tuesday and will probably swing every other day for now. Strawberry also said he will not make the next road trip, but will travel with the team for the last trip of the season.

The Dodgers continued negotiations with Darren Dreifort, their first-round draft choice in the June draft, Dreifort has dropped his demand for a three-year major league contract in lieu of a larger signing bonus. The Dodgers said, however, that their latest offer, about $1.3-million, is also their final offer.
