DOCENT TRAINING:

Laguna Art Museum: The yearlong training program consists of Tuesday morning lectures on touring techniques (from October through May) plus both portions (20 weeks) of the “History of Art in America from 1760 to 1929” course listed above.

Docents-in-training must become members of the museum, pay $25 annual dues to the Docent Council and promise to be available to lead tours at least two times a month for two years following “graduation.” An informational coffee session will take place Sept. 14 at 9:30 am. Newport Harbor Art Museum: The first half of the nine-month weekly training program--which meets on Thursdays from 9:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m., and starts on Sept. 23--focuses on the history of art from the mid-19th Century to the present. Monica Rothschild-Boros--who holds a Ph.D. in archeology and teaches art history at UCI and Orange Coast College in Costa Mesa--is the principal lecturer. The second half of the course offers guidance on touring techniques taught by the Education Department staff and outside professionals.

Docents-in-training must be museum members and pay $150 for the course. Bilingual people are especially encouraged to apply. Active docents have a two-year commitment to lead tours in the museum or do community outreach on one day of the week, two or three times per month. (714) 759-1122.

Bowers Museum: The nine-month free weekly training sessions--Mondays from 10 a.m. to noon--include touring techniques, background information about museum exhibitions and topics dealing with the cultures represented by the museum collections. Bowers curators and guest specialists serve as lecturers. Docents-in-training must be museum members and pay a $40 fee.

Active docents must set aside two days per month to lead tours and continue to attend meetings and training sessions. The next training session is on Sept. 27. Cal State Fullerton: The weekly two-hour Thursday morning course--which runs through the academic year and prepares docents-in-training to lead tours at the Main Art Gallery and do school outreach--begins Sept. 9 at 10 a.m. in the Visual Arts building, Room 107.

The topic for 1993-94 is American art from the Colonial period up to World War II, with lectures by Cal State Fullerton faculty and others. There are several museum field trips. Guests are welcome anytime, and so are auditors (people who do not intend to become docents). Docents-to-be must become members of the university’s Art Alliance (fee: $25).
