SEAL BEACH : Community Center Renovation Finished

City officials hope that $90,000 worth of renovations to the North Seal Beach Community Center will help them better serve those who use the facility.

The renovations were completed last week, about two years after work at the St. Cloud Drive center began.

The center is home to a variety of programs ranging from exercise classes and Boy Scout meetings to ballet and karate lessons.

New lights, floors and ceilings were installed and the bathrooms were made accessible for disabled people.

The handicapped bathroom facilities will be particularly popular with some of the more than 100 senior citizens who receive a daily hot meal at the center, said Kathleen McGlynn, Seal Beach recreation supervisor.

“For some of the seniors who come, this is the only hot meal they eat all day,” McGlynn said, “so we try to be careful with them.”

The renovations were financed by federal grants, McGlynn said.

Construction work was delayed so that workers could remove some asbestos that had been found in the ceiling of the center.

The facility, which includes a large meeting hall and kitchen area, remained open during most of the renovation work.

It is near Leisure World and the College Park East district in the Rossmoor Shopping Center.
