Both kicker Jeff Jaeger and punter Jeff Gossett were cut less than a week before the season opener, but both can be re-signed today as free agents when the rosters go back up from 47 to 53 men.

“We have been talking to both Jeff Jaeger and Jeff Gossett about coming back,” said Steve Ortmayer, the Raiders’ director of football operations. “We are hoping to get it done. Both expressed an interest in staying here. Both want to be Raiders. We think it will work out.”

Unless the Raiders find alternatives in the free-agent market or on the waiver wire, defensive lineman Willie Broughton is also expected to be brought back today. So is running back Napoleon McCallum and offensive lineman Todd Peat, both of whom have seen their value go up because of injuries at their respective positions.

David Fulcher’s experimental move from safety to linebacker lasted one game. After spending seven seasons in the Cincinnati Bengals’ defensive backfield, Fulcher was tried out as a linebacker by the Raiders against the Rams on Saturday night. Monday, Fulcher was put on the termination list. “It was nobody’s fault,” Raider Coach Art Shell said. “We didn’t bring him in here early enough.”
