Town in Illinois Votes to Move to High Ground
Associated Press
VALMEYER, Ill. — An entire town of 900 people has voted to pick up and move to higher ground to the east in the wake of weeks of flooding this summer.
Ballots were passed out to voters last week, and 66% of 239 ballots tabulated approved the move, Mayor Dennis Knobloch said Saturday.
More than half of the 346 homes in town sustained major damage during the weeks of high water. Officials will now begin buying land, and construction could start next spring or summer, Knobloch said.
