South El Monte did not have to wait very long to gain its first victory in school history. The Eagles, who lost their opener against Cantwell Sacred Heart, defeated Monrovia, 24-16, last Friday.

South El Monte, under Coach Bill Thompson, took advantage of turnovers and penalties for the victory. Quarterback Felipe Rodriguez passed for 208 yards and two touchdowns for the Eagles, who play St. Anthony’s on Friday.

Cameron Murray, a senior at Glendora High who was The Times’ 1992 Player of the Year in boys’ basketball, made an oral commitment to attend USC.

Murray, a guard, said he chose USC over UCLA and California. Murray’s brother, Tracy, was a standout at Glendora and UCLA and now plays for the Portland Trail Blazers.

Cameron Murray has averaged 23.9 points a game in his first three seasons at Glendora.

Mike LeDuc, who was the varsity basketball coach at Glendora for six seasons before resigning last year, will return to coach the Tartans this season.

LeDuc, Glendora’s athletic director, has guided Glendora to two Southern Section championships. He succeeds Greg Plutko, who compiled a 19-9 record last season. Plutko resigned as coach when he accepted a job as a vice principal at a middle school.

COMMUNITY COLLEGES

The unbeaten Mt. San Antonio College football team plays host to Southwestern on Saturday night after improving to 2-0 with a 36-14 victory over Riverside.

Running back Leonard Green had another big game for the Mounties, who wiped out a 7-0 first-quarter deficit with 36 unanswered points. Green, a sophomore, produced 207 all-purpose yards. He gained 85 yards in 15 carries and scored a touchdown. He also caught five passes for 122 yards.

Quarterback Cody Smith completed 18 of 26 passes for 284 yards and two touchdowns. Mark Butler caught six passes for 74 yards and a touchdown. He also returned three kickoffs for 97 yards.

Citrus College travels to College of the Desert, riding the momentum gained from a 20-6 victory over Los Angeles Southwest.

Quarterback John Martin rushed for the go-ahead touchdown and connected with Rashon McCall on an 18-yard touchdown pass to seal the victory that evened Citrus’ record at 1-1.

Pasadena City College will be looking for its first victory Saturday when the Lancers play host to Palomar.

Pasadena fell to 0-2 after a 20-16 loss to Fullerton, which scored the game-winning touchdown on a reverse late in the fourth quarter. Pasadena fullback Michael Thompson rushed for 103 yards.

COLLEGES

The Pomona Pitzer football team will attempt to resume its winning ways Saturday when the Sagehens play host to Colorado College in a nonconference game.

Pomona Pitzer, which defeated Macalester College (Minn.) in its opener, lost to Redlands, 58-25, in its Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference opener last week.

La Verne (1-1), which defeated Claremont, 46-10, in its SCIAC opener last week, will play host to Cal Lutheran on Saturday. Cal Lutheran (2-0) is coming off a 14-3 SCIAC victory over Whittier.

La Verne boasts the SCIAC’s leading passer in Ryan Campuzano, who has completed 25 of 50 attempts for 421 yards and three touchdowns. Danny Pasquil of La Verne is the leading rusher, averaging 149.5 yards a game.

Claremont (0-2) has a bye this week after the loss against La Verne, the Stags’ 21st consecutive defeat. John Shipp passed for 182 yards and a touchdown for Claremont.

Azusa Pacific (0-2) plays Whittier on Saturday in a nonconference game. The Cougars lost to Occidental, 14-6, last weekend. Occidental scored two touchdowns in the fourth quarter to hold off Azusa.

Pomona Pitzer’s women’s volleyball team won its own seven-team tournament last weekend by defeating Occidental in the championship match.

Petrea Moyle and Regan Gough of Pomona Pitzer were selected to the all-tournament team.

Cal Poly Pomona finished third in the Cal State Dominguez Hills tournament. Nikki Egilske of Pomona was selected all-tournament.

Allison Thompson of the Cal Poly Pomona women’s soccer team entered the week one goal shy of the school’s career mark of 30 set by Shannon Payne.

Thompson scored twice during a 5-0 victory over Azusa Pacific.

PREP ATHLETE OF WEEK

Todd Alcantara, Glendora-- Alcantara, who missed most of last season because of a knee injury, gained 202 yards and scored three touchdowns for the Tartans in their 19-6 victory over Covina.

COLLEGE ATHLETE OF WEEK

Lawrence Phillips, Nebraska-- Phillips, a Times’ All-San Gabriel Valley back last season, rushed for 137 yards in 28 carries and scored a touchdown in the Cornhuskers’ 14-13 victory over UCLA at the Rose Bowl.
