La Puente : Officials Trap 2 Medflies
Two male Mediterranean fruit flies have been trapped in the La Puente area, agricultural officials reported Wednesday.
The Medflies were captured near Seventh Avenue and Valley Boulevard. One was trapped late last week and the other was nabbed Tuesday, said Myrlys Hollis of the state Department of Food and Agriculture.
Hollis said the properties near the traps were treated with malathion bait Tuesday.
On Friday, after residents are notified, officials from the Cooperative Medfly Project will begin spraying malathion bait on ground foliage in a 200-meter radius of the fly finds.
Residents in La Puente are urged to keep home-grown fruit at home to stop the spread of the Medfly to other areas. Anyone finding Medfly maggots in fruit should contact the Medfly Project: (800) 491-1899.
