A transient accused of kidnaping, assaulting and attempting to rape a 71-year-old woman in a Glendale church pleaded not guilty Wednesday.

Filiberto Gutierrez Maldonado, 34, faces three felony counts of kidnaping for the purpose of rape, assault with intent to commit rape and attempted rape stemming from an Aug. 2 attack inside Incarnation Roman Catholic Church on North Brand Boulevard. If convicted, he could be sentenced to up to 11 years in state prison, prosecutors said.

Maldonado, who was arraigned before Pasadena Superior Court Judge Thomas W. Stoever, remains in custody in lieu of $50,000 bail.
