PREP ROUNDUP : Late Score Gives Marina an Upset in Water Polo
Spencer Miller scored with 1 minute 2 seconds left Friday to give Marina an 18-17 upset nonleague water polo victory over Whittier La Serna, ranked sixth in Southern Section Division II.
Tim DeVries led the Vikings with six goals, and Kirk Sweigard and Lance Banuk scored three each. Marina is 8-6.
In other nonleague water polo:
Irvine 10, Trabuco Hills 8--Jeff Higley, Matt Jensen, Jason Lezak and Scott Gibson each scored twice for Irvine (11-4), which scored five fourth-quarter goals. K.C. Nance scored four times for host Trabuco Hills (9-6).
Costa Mesa 11, Dana Hills 5--Senior Sam Grayeli scored eight goals for visiting Costa Mesa. Chris Avitia had 13 saves for the Mustangs.
Canyon 15, Troy 5--Aaron Harries scored eight goals and Jav Davis four for Canyon.
Downey 7, Tustin 6--Jeremy Moreno and Manhun Park each scored two goals for Downey (7-8) in their victory over Tustin (9-11). Jeff Wetstein had eight saves for Downey, and Tyler Sundberg had five for Tustin.
Foothill 11, University 10--Brian Brown scored with 1:54 left to give Foothill, ranked fifth in Orange County, the victory. Foothill is 10-5, University 9-5.
Santa Ana 12, Century 6--Down by one in the fourth quarter, Jerry Alonso scored five goals to lead Santa Ana (1-9) to a victory over Century (0-8). Maer Cruz had four saves for Santa Ana.
