All six candidates running for three positions on the Ventura Unified School District Board of Education have agreed to participate in a forum Thursday sponsored by the League of Women Voters.

The forum will be held in the Anacapa Middle School cafeteria, 100 S. Mills Road, Ventura. Starting time is 7:30 p.m.

Five challengers and incumbent John B. Walker are competing for three board seats. Walker is seeking a second four-year term, while Michael Boggs, Velma L. Lomax, Jim Oliver, Cliff Rodrigues and Michael Shanahan are each campaigning for a first term.

The candidates have been asked to state what their budget priorities are, what curriculum changes they would support, and their reasons for supporting or opposing Proposition 174, the voucher initiative.

“We chose to sponsor this forum because school board elections so often get stuck in the background, and the City Council race is receiving plenty of attention already,” said the league’s Ruth Gallagher.

Two of the three board seats were vacated when trustees May Lee Berry and Terrence Kilbride decided not to seek reelection.
