ROUNDUP : Canyon Upsets Saugus in Battle of Unbeaten Volleyball Powers
Canyon High volleyball player Susan Brondell had a team-high 12 kills to lead the Cowboys to a 15-1, 15-8, 13-15, 15-10 upset victory over Saugus in a Foothill League match at Saugus.
Canyon (10-0, 4-0 in league play) is ranked eighth in Southern Section Division III and handed third-ranked Saugus (5-1, 3-1) its first setback of the season.
Darcy Frandsen added 11 kills and Cindy Sweetnam had 10.
Lindsay Estes topped the Centurions with 17 kills and Cindy Luby had seven. Laura Wagoner had 40 assists.
In other girls’ volleyball matches:
Westlake d. Simi Valley, 15-12, 11-15, 7-15, 15-6, 15-10--Shanon Sincock’s 23 kills helped the Warriors (8-5, 5-2) come from behind to beat Simi Valley in a Marmonte League match at Simi Valley.
Kristin Lee added 18 kills and Stephanie Salm had 48 assists for Westlake.
Kristen Scott led the Pioneers (2-7, 2-5) with 13 kills and 16 digs. Kristen Hansen had 30 assists.
Thousand Oaks d. Royal, 15-13, 15-13, 8-15, 15-11--Keri Wetzsteon had 14 kills for the Lancers (7-6, 6-1) in a Marmonte League match at Royal.
Jenny Treglown led the Highlanders (7-6, 4-3) with 20 kills and Teri Enright chipped in with 14. Heidi Ferguson had 40 assists.
Agoura d. Channel Islands, 15-11, 15-2,15-3--Tammy Barrus had 18 assists and sister Heather Barrus served nine aces for the Chargers in a Marmonte League match at Agoura (12-1, 7-0).
Harvard-Westlake d. Chaminade, 15-2, 15-5, 15-11--Jenni Kriste had 10 kills and teammate Hillary Gross added 12 digs for Harvard-Westlake in the Mission League match at Chaminade.
Lindsay Powers added 35 assists and Amanda Selby had 10 blocks for the Wolverines (8-0, 6-0), the No. 1-ranked team in Southern Section Division II.
Nordhoff d. Santa Clara, 15-11, 15-3, 15-13--The Rangers (3-4, 2-0) handed the Saints their first loss of the season in a Frontier League match at Santa Clara.
Nordhoff setter Julie Sandefur, an All-Southern Section Division III second-team selection last season, played for the first time since Sept. 11, when she injured ligaments in her neck.
Buena d. Ventura, 15-3, 15-8, 15-5--Rene Goth had seven kills and 10 digs for the Bulldogs in a Channel League match at Ventura. Beth Ann McGill had 40 assists for Buena (5-2 in league play).
COLLEGE WATER POLO
Ventura 16, Pierce 6--Paul Krueger scored four goals and teammates Chris Stehle, Joe Stephens and Dan Ashmore each added two for Ventura in the Western State Conference match at Pierce.
Ventura (15-6, 3-0) led, 8-1, at the end of the first quarter and 13-3 at halftime.
WOMEN’S VOLLEYBALL
Cal Lutheran d. Claremont-Mudd Scripps, 15-7, 14-16, 0-15, 15-10, 15-11--The Regals (12-8, 3-2) came from behind at Claremont-Mudd Scripps (8-8, 3-2) in a Southern California Intercollegiate Athletic Conference match.
Sophomore Darcy White led the Regals with 15 kills. Tracy Little added 11 and Tara Thomas had 26 assists.
