No Contest: Foothill Pounds El Modena, 39-0
TUSTIN — Foothill Coach Tom Meiss expected an agonizingly close game. Instead, Foothill posted a rout.
With quarterback Kevin Daft having his finest game yet, the Knights rolled to a 39-0 victory over El Modena Friday night in a Century League opener at Tustin High.
Daft, a senior, rushed for 144 yards and a touchdown in six carries and passed for 136 yards and two more scores as Foothill (3-3, 1-0 in league) won its third consecutive game.
“This league reminds me of gravel in your Grape Nuts,” Meiss said. “You don’t know what’s going to happen. I thought this would be a tough game. . . . a nail-biter.”
It wasn’t. Foothill took an 11-0 lead on a 26-yard field goal by Steve Patterson and a five-yard touchdown run by John Bain with 6 minutes 21 seconds remaining in the second quarter. Daft, who rushed for 132 yards in the first half, scored on a 85-yard touchdown run to make it 19-0 at the half.
Foothill continued pounding the Vanguards (4-2, 0-1) in the second half. Bain, who had two touchdowns, scored on a 10-yard pass from Daft with 8:55 left in the third quarter. Four minutes later, Daft hit running back Tramel Robinson for a 71-yard scoring pass.
Foothill finished with 319 yards in total offense. Since losing to Newport Harbor three weeks ago, the Knights have averaged more than 350 yards.
