SCORECARD : Group Gives $405,000 to Cancer Unit

John Wayne Cancer Institute Auxiliary paid tribute to the late Ellen Cooperman, a board member, at its membership luncheon Sept. 26 at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. The auxiliary presented a check for $405,000 (money raised this year) to the institute for cancer research. Author Judith Viorst received the Woman of Achievement award. Elaine Lerman, Ina Lewis and Maddy Gordon were co-chairs.

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation raised $350,000 at its Oct. 9 celebrity and amateur tennis tournament at the Beverly Hills Country Club. “The Tennis Ball” benefit, sponsored by American Airlines, began with a black tie dinner the night before at the Regent Beverly Wilshire. Other sponsors included ASICS Tiger Corp., Club de La Tour, Hyatt Hotel Corp., Pantron Corp., See’s Candies, Seiko Time Corp. and Ted Slavin. Proceeds will provide research, care and treatment centers. )

National Multiple Sclerosis Society raised $410,000 at its “Dinner of Champions” on Sept. 27 at the Beverly Hilton. Honorees were Amy Alcott, Tom Dreesen, Lawrence Pressman and Daniel J. Travanti. United Artists Theatres hosted the gala. Co-hosts were Pacific Theatres and Toyota USA. Proceeds will aid research and the society’s Southern California chapter’s service programs.

Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences’ Endowment Fund announced contributions of $50,000 each from James Cameron, Harrison Ford and Saul Zaentz. The money will provide interest revenue for future operations of the center, which houses the Margaret Herrick Library, the Academy Film Archive and the Photographic Stills Archive.

California Museum Foundation Muses, a museum support group, honored Dr. Susan Love, director of the UCLA Comprehensive Breast Center, at a Sept. 23 luncheon. The Regent Beverly Wilshire benefit netted $25,000, which will provide science workshop scholarships to students in the area. Committee members were Francine Collins, Elisabeth Donley, Victoria Foote, Marcia Goldfarb, Vera Handley, Inez Kimble, Nadine Marten, Margo Leonetti and Sherry Tunnell.

South Bay Free Clinic will use the following donations to care for the needy at its free health-care clinics in Manhattan Beach, Hermosa Beach and Gardena: $3,500 from Mattel Foundation for pediatric care; $5,000 from McDonnell Douglas Employees’ Community Fund; $1,000 from Torrance Memorial Hospital; $500 from Copley Los Angeles Newspapers; and $500 from Downey Savings.
