Carpenter to Announce Candidacy for Sheriff
Ventura County Sheriff Larry Carpenter will officially announce his entry into the 1994 county sheriff’s race Thursday.
This will be Carpenter’s first bid for an elected position.
A former undersheriff, the lifelong Fillmore resident was appointed to the sheriff’s post Jan. 1 by the county Board of Supervisors. Carpenter, 47, is serving the remaining two years of former Sheriff John Gillespie’s term. Gillespie retired in 1992, citing health reasons.
“I’m not a politician,” Carpenter said. “I’m a cop that has to run for election to keep his job.”
Carpenter will make his announcement at 7 p.m. at the Veterans Memorial Building at 511 2nd St. in Fillmore. A limited number of tickets to the kickoff party are still available. Tickets are $10 per person and can be obtained by contacting the Fillmore Chamber of Commerce at 524-0351 or the Ventura County Deputy Sheriff’s Assn. at 987-9785.
