COLLEGE FOOTBALL : BIG EAST ROUNDUP : Receivers Don’t Have Much of a Hand in Miami Victory

Ryan Collins scored on runs of 51 and five yards, passed for two touchdowns and had three potential touchdown passes dropped Saturday in No. 4 Miami’s 42-7 Big East Conference victory over Temple at Miami.

“Ryan played very well,” Miami Coach Dennis Erickson said. “We dropped a lot of balls on him, and that really upset me. We can’t do that down the road.”

Miami, 6-1 overall and 4-0 in the Big East, extended its winning streak at home to 55 games, two shy of Alabama’s NCAA record. Erickson earned his 100th victory, including 50 at Miami.

Temple (1-7, 0-4) crossed midfield only twice.

In 2 1/2 quarters, Collins completed 16 of 29 passes for 214 yards with two interceptions, one of which bounced out of receiver Chris Jones’ hands in the end zone.

No. 13 West Virginia 43, Syracuse 0--Robert Walker rushed for 198 yards in 26 carries and scored two touchdowns, one on a 90-yard run, as the Mountaineers (7-0, 3-0) won at Syracuse, N.Y. Syracuse (4-3-1, 1-3) managed only 188 total yards and was shut out for the second week in a row.

Virginia Tech 31, East Carolina 12--Tailback Dwayne Thomas scored two touchdowns and Antonio Freeman set a Virginia Tech record with his ninth touchdown catch of the season in a nonconference victory at Blacksburg, Va.

East Carolina (2-6) rallied in the second quarter and pulled to within 14-12 by halftime. But Virginia Tech (6-2) scored on its first three possessions of the second half.

Boston College 42, Tulane 14--David Green ran for two touchdowns and scored on a 51-yard pass play to lead the Eagles in a nonconference game at Boston.

Glenn Foley completed 15 of 28 passes for 327 yards, with no interceptions, for Boston College (5-2). Tulane is 2-6.
