World IN BRIEF : NEW ZEALAND : Ruling Party Wins 1-Seat Edge

The ruling National Party secured a one-seat parliamentary majority after absentee votes were finally tallied in one of New Zealand’s closest elections. Initial returns from the Nov. 6 election gave neither the conservative National Party nor the opposition Labor Party a majority. But with nearly all the results in, Prime Minister Jim Bolger claimed victory for his party, which won 50 seats in the 99-seat Parliament, enabling it to rule for a second term.
