Countywide : Anti-Drug Program’s Founders Honored
The co-founders of the “Drug Use is Life Abuse” program have been named winners of United Way’s 1993 Alexis de Tocqueville award.
Sheriff Brad Gates and Michael K. Hayde, president of Western National Properties, will receive the honor during a ceremony Dec. 8 at the Robert Mondavi Wine and Food Center in Costa Mesa.
Gates and Hayde developed the program as a way to keep youths from taking drugs. The program includes drug education classes in schools throughout the county.
The award is presented annually to residents who have volunteered their time to the community, said Janice Parks, promotions manager for the United Way.
Recipients are chosen by the United Way’s Alexis de Tocqueville Society, which is made up of people who have contributed more than $10,000 a year to the United Way Community Campaign.
The award was named after the 19th-Century French writer who chronicled his travels through United States in the book “Democracy in America.”
