OXNARD : Meeting to Focus on Cleanup at Base
A public meeting will be held today at Oxnard College by Point Mugu Navy officials to outline efforts to clean up several sites on the base where soil and ground-water contamination has been discovered.
The meeting, scheduled from 3:30 to 6:15 p.m. at the college’s Administration Building, Room LRC 3, will offer the public the opportunity to review the cleanup efforts, said Cora Scott, a spokeswoman for the Naval Air Weapons Station.
Scott said that under a military version of the federal Superfund toxic cleanup program, the Navy is investigating eight sites on the base for contamination.
During the meeting, residents will be able to ask Navy officials questions on the cleanup effort and view displays and photographs of the contaminated sites.
“Much of the contamination comes from where paint or solvents were once stored or where fuel tanks sprang leaks and damaged the soil beneath them,” Scott said.
Scott said additional public meetings will be scheduled during 1994. Members of the public seeking more information on today’s meeting may call the base at (805) 989-8094.
