HIGH SCHOOL VOLLEYBALL : Bishop Montgomery Falls to Los Gatos
Playing for its first State volleyball championship, Torrance Bishop Montgomery lost to Los Gatos, 15-9, 15-13, 10-15, 6-15, 15-12, in the Division III final Saturday at Cal State Fullerton.
“We are a really young team,” said Becci Roehl, a Bishop Montgomery senior setter. “Sometimes we have trouble focusing and being patient.”
The victory gave Los Gatos (23-6) its first State championship.
San Jose Mitty d. Santa Ana Calvary Chapel, 15-12, 15-8, 12-15, 18-16--Archbishop Mitty (29-6), which had never gotten past the second round of the Northern California playoffs, dominated the Division IV final with a lineup that featured three players 6 feet or taller.
Calvary Chapel (22-2), making its first State championship appearance, was led by Courtney Owens with 20 kills.
Brentwood d. Menlo Park Sacred Heart Prep, 15-13, 15-9, 15-9--Junior outside hitter Kelly Gentile led Brentwood (26-2)--in its first title appearance--with 16 kills in the Division V match.
