COMMUNITY COLLEGE ROUNDUP : Golden West Advances at State Volleyball

The Golden West women’s volleyball team advanced to the winners’ bracket final in the community college State championship tournament with a sweep of San Luis Obispo Cuesta, 15-12, 17-15, 15-6, Saturday at Southwestern College in Chula Vista.

Golden West trailed, 15-14, in the second game, but Vanessa Dahl served three consecutive points to win the game, including two aces.

Becca Foltz led the Rustlers (25-0) with 13 kills. Becki Gelke added 11 kills and Heidi Emmrigh had 10. Jessica Lee had 40 assists.

Golden West will play Cerritos at 9:30 a.m. today at Southwest. If Golden West wins, it advances to tonight’s championship game in the double-elimination tourney.

In the Southern California wrestling tournament:

Rancho Santiago finished second behind Cerritos in the 11-team South Regional championships at Golden West College.

Rancho Santiago had three individual first-place winners and one third-place finisher.

Shann Holloway took first place at 126 pounds, Dave Niedringhaus captured the title at 134 pounds and Matt Padgett took first in the 167-pound class. Bobby Campos took third place at 118 pounds.

Cypress’ Reza Khayat took fourth place at 150 pounds. Cerritos won the tournament with 140.25 points, followed by Rancho Santiago’s 122.75. Golden West finished eighth with 44.75 points, and Cypress took 10th place with 20 points.

In the Grossmont men’s basketball tournament:

Southwestern 100, Rancho Santiago 98 (OT)--Sean Amos had 32 points and 15 rebounds for Rancho Santiago (7-3), which led by 19 at the half.

In women’s basketball:

Orange Coast 76, Cuesta 61--LeAnn Kazmer had 23 points for Orange Coast, which won the consolation championship of the Cuesta College Tournament. Former Santiago High School star America Robledo made the all-tournament team after scoring a total of 48 points in the two-day tournament.

Cypress 54, Ventura 51 (OT)--Christy Kalbhenn hit four free throws in overtime to help Cypress win the championship of its own tournament.

The Chargers led, 24-19, at halftime, but fell behind late in the second half. Cypress’ Stephanie Werdel sank two free throws late in regulation to send the game to overtime.

Tournament MVP Sara Works scored 20 points to lead the Chargers (9-1), while Julie Hardy had 20 points and 15 rebounds to lead Ventura.
