The City of Irvine is seeking applicants for a onetime grant of $100,000 to be used to establish a local arts agency. Any nonprofit organization or any group seeking nonprofit status may apply by Feb. 3 to Irvine City Hall, where a grant application workshop will be held Wednesday at 6 p.m. Applicants will present their proposals to the city Community Services Commission on March 2. Once a local arts agency is established, it will not receive city funding but must seek support such as fees, private donations and grants from other sources, according to Patricia Fierro, city Community Services Department manager. The city’s Cultural Affairs Commission was eliminated by the City Council last year.

Michael Kuchwara of the Associated Press called it “halfhearted.” Howard Kissel of New York’s Daily News noted: “If the original production made ‘My Fair Lady’ seem the Rolls-Royce of American musicals, this revival makes it a Yugo.”
