Volunteers Sought to Critique Math Books

Ventura County residents will have the opportunity this spring to review mathematics textbooks for depictions that stereotype males or females, minorities, the elderly or the disabled.

The state Department of Education is seeking volunteers to sign up to work at least one weekend in May inspecting textbooks and other instructional materials proposed for use in public school math classes.

After volunteers have examined the materials, a panel of mathematicians and math teachers will review their educational content.

To ensure that reviewers reflect the diversity of the state’s population, education officials are urging minorities, students over 18 years old, senior citizens and people with disabilities to join in the effort.

Those interested should call the state Department of Education at (916) 445-2731.
