Outsized Pepperdine Falls Short
EL PASO — Iowa State forward Julius Michalik scored 22 points as the Cyclones beat Pepperdine, 71-64, to take third place in the Sun Carnival Classic Thursday night.
Iowa State improved to 7-1; Pepperdine dropped to 6-4.
Michalik ended any chance of a Wave rally when he drove the baseline for a layin with 47 seconds left that made the score 69-60. Wave Center Loren Meyer then closed out Iowa State’s scoring with a breakaway dunk.
The Cyclone frontline of Michalik and Meyer, who both stand 6 feet 11, dominated the smaller Waves. Meyer scored 20 points.
Damin Lopez, who made five three-point shots, led Pepperdine with 21, and Dana Jones added 13.
