PRO FOOTBALL / DAILY REPORT : RAIDERS : Elway Probably Will Play It Safe

Because Denver is already assured of a playoff berth, Raider linebacker Winston Moss does not expect the Broncos to take any risks with quarterback John Elway on Sunday at the Coliseum.

“I see Denver coming in here playing very conservative on offense,” said Moss, who has a team-leading 97 tackles. “If they took a look at our first meeting, they saw Elway getting hit every time he went back to pass.”

In their first match in October, Elway was sacked seven times and completed 16 of 30 passes for 188 yards with one interception.

“Elway had to be pretty sore the next day,” Moss said. “The biggest thing for the Broncos is to have (Elway) not get hit so many times and for him to come out of the game without injury.”

In 18 games against the Raiders, Elway has thrown 23 interceptions and been sacked 52 times.

Although leading rusher Greg Robinson will sit out Sunday because of a knee injury, the Raiders still have three players on their active roster who have gained more than 1,000 yards in a season in either college or the NFL.

The problem is, only Napoleon McCallum will be in the Raider backfield against the Broncos. McCallum, who has only 779 yards in his five-year pro career, gained 1,237 yards as a senior at the U.S. Naval Academy.

The other two 1,000-yard rushers are tight end Ethan Horton, who gained 1,077 yards in 1984 at North Carolina, and defensive back Dan Land, who rushed for 1,200 yards in 1986 at Albany State.
