Getaway Driver to Be Sent to Youth Camp

A 17-year-old boy who admitted driving the getaway car in the Dec. 15 shooting of a Chatsworth High School student was sentenced to a youth camp Monday, after a hearing at San Fernando Valley Juvenile Court in Sylmar.

The Burbank youth, whose name was not released, was charged as an accomplice in the attack on Gabriel Gettleson, a 17-year-old student who was shot three times after refusing to give up his backpack during a robbery attempt.

He is “a minor who didn’t take part in the crime, but aided individuals who he knew had participated in this horrendous act,” said Deputy Dist. Atty. Eduards R. Abele. “There are consequences to those actions, especially if it takes place on a school campus.”

Hearings were postponed for two other youths involved in the shooting, a 14-year-old Sylmar boy and a 17-year-old Lake View Terrace boy.

The 14-year-old, who police said confessed to shooting Gettleson, will face premeditated attempted murder charges Feb. 28. In addition, he has been charged with attempted robbery and assault with a deadly weapon stemming from other incidents. On Feb. 8, prosecutors will determine whether to put the 17-year-old Lake View Terrace boy on trial as an adult. He is charged with attempted murder, attempted robbery and robbery.
