SANTA ANA : House, Garage Fire May Have Been Set

A vacant house and detached garage suffered about $80,000 in damage during a fire Tuesday morning that may have been deliberately set, fire officials said.

Fire was spotted raging through a single-story, three-bedroom house in the 1400 block of West Richland Avenue at 11:40 a.m., said Santa Ana Deputy Fire Chief Wayne Bowman.

“The origin of the fire was suspicious,” Bowman said. “We had some witnesses who said they saw people leaving the house right before the fire.”

It took 16 firefighters about 28 minutes to put out the blaze, which did not damage any other homes on the street.

Bowman said the house was basically empty except for some discarded clothing. He said a family that lived in the house had recently been evicted.

“The eviction and the fire do not appear to be related,” Bowman said.
