SAN PEDRO : Yacht Explodes in Harbor, Killing Welder on Board
A yacht exploded Wednesday afternoon at its harbor berth, killing a welder who was on board, authorities said.
The 55-foot Duchess Diane was engulfed by flames about 3:30 p.m. in the Cerritos Channel area of the Port of Los Angeles, Coast Guard spokeswoman Brenda Toledo said.
Coast Guard and Los Angeles Fire Department crews doused the flames in about 15 minutes, but were unable to prevent the death of one man who was welding in the hold.
Fire Department spokesman Jim Wells said the cause of the blast in the vessel, a converted trawler, was under investigation.
