NHL ROUNDUP : Red Wings Become the Latest Victims of Lightning, 4-2

All of a sudden, no one wants any part of the Tampa Bay Lightning.

The Lightning, which has frustrated the NHL’s best teams, defeated the Detroit Red Wings, 4-2, Wednesday night at Detroit.

Tampa Bay is 6-1-1 in its last eight games, with victories over the New York Rangers, Toronto Maple Leafs and Red Wings.

“We’re playing very disciplined hockey right now,” Lightning Coach Terry Crisp said. “We played well enough in the neutral zone that they weren’t able to get up a head of steam. The few times they did, (goaltender Daren) Puppa was there.”

The loss was only the second in 15 games for the Red Wings, who had a nine-game home unbeaten streak ended. They took a season-low 17 shots.

“Tampa Bay just completely shut us down,” Detroit Coach Scotty Bowman said. “That’s the fewest chances we’ve had all year. I think we got 9-10, and most of those were on the power play.”

It was Detroit’s first home loss in more than two months, dating to a Nov. 9 loss to the Edmonton Oilers.

“They played very defensively, like Anaheim does,” Nicklas Lidstrom said. “Tampa Bay did a better job of executing, though.”

Montreal 3, New Jersey 2--Vincent Damphousse had a goal and an assist and the Canadiens’ penalty killers repeatedly stifled the Devils at Montreal.

Damphousse and Benoit Brunet scored in the first period, when the Canadiens had to kill off five minor penalties.

Kirk Muller had a power-play goal in the second period for Montreal, which has won four in a row.

Vancouver 4, Quebec 3--Trevor Linden scored a short-handed goal with 52 seconds to play to lift the Canucks at Vancouver.

Winnipeg 3, Buffalo 2--Teemu Selanne tied the score and set up Nelson Emerson’s game-winning goal in the third period at Winnipeg.

Selanne took a pass from Teppo Numminen to score from the faceoff circle and pull the Jets even at 14:15 of the period.

A little more than two minutes later, Selanne came in on a rush with Emerson and set up the winning goal.
