World IN BRIEF : HAITI : U.S. Presses Aristide to Name a Premier

Concerned about a political vacuum in Haiti, the State Department urged exiled President Jean-Bertrand Aristide to lay the groundwork for a new government by naming a prime minister. Haiti has been without a prime minister since the previous Aristide appointee, Robert Malval, stepped down in mid-December. His government lasted but four months and was ineffective because of intimidation by armed groups loyal to the military.
